I managed 39 miles this previous week. Almost all of them were in before 7 am. My alarm each morning goes off at 4:59 AM (and the screen reads "3:59 at Ice Age" when I pick up the phone), and after a couple snoozes, I've gotten in to the habit of getting moving and getting some miles in. I felt absoulutely terrible on a couple of those runs which I blame on a couple beers the night before. Mix a bit of alcohol with a guy that has very little tolerance with a fussy 3 week old, and it's gonna be rough in the morning. I can't do much about the 3 week old (actually, 1 month tomorrow!) so I guess the beer is out. So be it. This week I'd like to get a bit closer to 45 or 50 miles and work in a long run too. I'm still just focusing on base building and doing some faster stuff if I feel like it. Come March, I'll start getting more focused on strength and speed, and then April will hopefully be much more trail work and specificity for Ice Age. I've got a weekend seminar near the course, so I hope to get down there and do some speed work on the course in April.
One of these years I'd like to run every 50k in Wisconsin. That would be:
John Dick
Chippewa
Ice Age
Keyes Peak
Dances with Dirt
North Face
Glacial Trail
*NK50K - Northern Kettle Run on my own - the Northern Kettle Ice Age trail is 31.6 miles long
Judging by the reports, this was the year to do John Dick. Zach Bitter ran 3:36! HIs 31 miles at John Dick were miles 102-133 that week, too. WOW. It'll be fun to see him run at the IAT50 miler amongst all the other fast guys signed up.
Other midwest 50k's on the list are, in order of priority:
Superior/Moose Mountain
Afton
Marquette
Wild Duluth
MadCity
Chicago Lakefront
Some day...in 2009 BC (before children) I ran 8 races of marathon distance or longer. Darn kids!
